a5c7b9f00b After a publisher changes a writer's debut novel about a deadly assassin from fiction to non-fiction, the author finds himself thrust into the world of his lead character, and must take on the role of his character for his own survival. Kevin James makes me laugh. He's always the same, I know, and he doesn't have anywhere near the range of the late John Candy, for instance, but there's something about that Blue Collar Everyman that is appealing.

Here he stars in "True Memoirs of an International Assassin" from 2016. He plays Sam, an insurance man writing the fictional story of an international hit man. He relies on a former operative friend, Amos (Ron Rifkin) to give his book more reality.

One day Amos tells him the story of an international assassin who disappeared and was thought dead, The Ghost, though he insists it's not for the book.

Before you can say The Ghost, of course, Sam has built this phantom into his story. And because his details are a little too correct, he soon finds himself in a heap of trouble.

There are some very funny performances here, especially from Kelen ColemanSam's agent/publisher. Her office is at Starbuck's, and she changes her name each time she orders coffee because there are so many writers there, she doesn't want them to know who she is.

Andy Garcia is greatEl Toro; Zulay Henao is tough and powerfula lone female agent in Venezuela; Andrew Howard gives a funny performanceAnton Masovich, strutting around with a loud voice and killing people. The whole cast was top-notch.

This is an action picture so expect things to blow up and see a lot of fighting. It's all in fun. It's Kevin James after all - and right about now, he was just what I needed. RELEASED IN 1970 and directed by Jeff Wadlow, "True Memoirs of an International Assassin" details events when an unpublished American author's spy novel is changed by his new publisher from fiction to non-fiction, thus thrusting the homebody Kevin James) into the thrilling, life-or-death world of his fictional protagonist in the most dangerous city on Earth: Caracas, Venezuela. Zulay Henao plays the Latino babe he teams-up with there. Kim Coates, Maurice Compte, Andrew Howard and Andy Garcia appearother characters the writer meets in South America.

If you like Kevin James, this is an action-packed comedy highlighted on the female front by Zulay, Emilie Ullerup and others (e.g. Katie Couric). It's too incidental to give a higher grade, but it's snappy and thrilling for what it is. I enjoyed the stereotypical depiction of a filthy rich drug lord, basically living like Hugh Hefner in a vast mansion with half-naked women frolicking about the pool.

THE FILM RUNS 98 minutes and was shot in New York City, Atlanta & Dominican Republic. WRITERS: Jeff Morris & Wadlow.

GRADE: B- It’s damnable with faint praise. It’s too cheap to be thrilling, and too earnest to be all that offensive. Mired in clichés. Mostly flat. A weak Spy. Only Kevin James diehards need apply.
